When it comes to reputational risk management, social media is one of the biggest threats to your company’s well-being. With KPMG estimating that 42 per cent of companies now have a social media presence, these risks are a real challenge for businesses.
Often the challenge of managing a social media presence will fall to a company’s public relations department, leaving them in the unenviable position of having to prevent risks before they become an issue, and managing threats that do emerge online.
Faced with these challenges, there are a number of different avenues PR professionals can pursue in order to get the most out of their social media presence.
One of the first things to consider is how to address potential issues before they begin. As with medicine, prevention is often the best cure when it comes to managing your reputational risk on social media.
There are many ways to limit this risk. Ensuring that as few people as possible have access to social media accounts, changing log in details and reviewing access options regularly are all easy ways to ensure that your company’s social media presence is not a liability.
It also pays to have processes in place to edit content as it is posted. There are many cases of companies accidently posting content with spelling mistakes or other overlooked errors which require considerable investment to overcome, once they are in the public domain.
Finally, no matter how many preventative measures you put in place, there will always be incidents which occur beyond your control. Taking the time to plan for these and have contingency methods in place can ensure that your business remains in a strong position, regardless of the challenges that arise on social media.
